If you live in a small space, you will certainly want to use every inch of it efficiently and practically. If you have no choice but to place the study directly in the bedroom, lay it out as best you can. Let’s take a look at how to combine the two rooms, and what the layout options are in the space for Workroom in the bedroom.
Nowadays, so many of us don’t require daily travel to the office and many people work full time from home. With this integration of work & home – it’s absolutely vital that the office space not only meets the practical needs, but is also ergonomically thought out, and that the design pleasantly completes the interior of the bedroom. You need a space that looks good & can encourage productivity. Also, it needs to be comfortable – if you work more than 4 hours on the computer and sit at a desk, you need Workroom in the bedroom
Shared space – a problem?
If you live alone, putting a study in your bedroom is easy. Of course, it depends on how big a work space you need, and how much time you spend there. But, you don’t have to take other’s needs into consideration – you won’t disturb anyone while you work, and no one disturbs you.
If you only work in the bedroom, you may tend to expand your work documents into the bedroom more than is appropriate and find that you have nowhere to lie down in the evening. The downside is the fact that you will be in only one room virtually all the time, and this can have a negative effect on your psyche. If you have an office in your bedroom and work intensively all day, don’t forget to take breaks, rest and walk in the fresh air.
However – if you have a partner living with you, you need to think about their daily routine. Who remembers lockdown, where we all were stuffed into a small space together? Not fun, right? So, if you live with someone who also is still working from home, you will need to take their routine into account. Especially if you work in the evening and at night. If you have children sleeping in the bedroom with you, choose a different location for the study.
If you just want a work area for occasional use, for example for hobbies you only do rarely and at weekends, settle for a smaller desk, chair and desk lamp in the corner.
Arrange it well- Workroom in the bedroom
So, what do you need in the office space? Well, first things first – you really need a good chair. This can’t be said enough! Sitting down all day is totally unnatural, so invest in some ergonomic furniture that will encourage good posture & promote good health. There are many ergonomic chairs on the market today that force you to keep your back in the right position. You can also buy ergonomic aids such as a laptop mat, specially shaped ergonomic keyboards or mice to counteract carpal tunnel syndrome. In short, accessories that make you more comfortable at work and support your health at the same time. It doesn’t have to be ugly either – our tip is to choose a neutral colour scheme (think whites, creams, greys) and stick with it. Avoid black, (tricky sometimes because it’s common in office furniture) it will really darken the space and make it feel claustrophobic. Try to always set up your area so that it looks out of a window, if possible – good for that feng shui & encourages natural light. Also invest in some good storage, and cable tidies to neaten the space. Plants are always a good idea – they will brighten the area & little decorative details will give you a positive association with your work space.
If you decide to set up a study in your bedroom or Workroom in the bedroom, try to visually and practically separate the two activities you will be doing there – sleep and work. One interesting solution may be a chic curtain, in a sheer or nicely patterned fabric, that separates the study from the bedroom.
If you have enough space, another option could be to arrange the furniture so that a small study is created in the space behind the wardrobes. Simply place a desk and good lighting here and you can work quite undisturbed.
